Your body needs three nutrients to thrive: protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Yes, fats! Good-for-you fats found in foods like nuts, seeds, and low-fat dairy give you energy, help rebuild cells, and produce needed hormones. The fats to limit or avoid are saturated and trans fats, found in foods like butter, high-fat dairy, red meat, and many processed foods.

Can you afford Shakeology?
The question really is can you afford not to drink Shakeology?
In today’s fast paced, “eat on the go” society, more young people are suffering from heart attack and stroke than ever before in history. With more to do in less time, people are turning to fast food and processed, packaged foods for the sake of convenience. Americans cook on average 30 minutes a day – less than any developed country. (Yahoo News article: Fast Food Nation). It’s no wonder that 1/3 of Americans are obese.
A lack of regular exercise only further exacerbates the problem. The combination of poor nutrition and lack of exercise leads to elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels and an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity.
A USA Today article reports that if Americans continue to pack on the pounds, obesity will cost U.S. healthcare $344 billion in medical-related expenses by 2018.
Shakeology – The Super Food
Most people don’t get enough nutrients from our daily diet for the body to function properly and in homeostasis. (WebMD Eating Essentials and 7 Nutrients Your Diet May Be Missing).
What makes Shakeology such a “super food” is the ultra high quality ingredients that were hand selected from around the world based on their potency and bioavailability (the ability to deliver the nutrients your body needs).
I’ve been eating healthy since November 2009 when I first started my fitness journey. Since changing my eating habits, I’m constantly in search of healthier ways to enjoy the foods I love. Here are some substitutes for mayo I’ve made that help me stay fit and healthy while enjoying my favorite foods.
Plain Yogurt – When making tuna, chicken or shrimp salad, use 1 part low fat mayo and 1 part fat free plain yogurt. You still get the taste and creaminess of mayo with half the fat and calories.
Hummus – I’ve grown to love hummus and experiment with all the different varieties on the market. Hummus is made from chickpeas which are high in fiber and protein and is a tasty and healthy alternative to mayo. It’s become a staple in my diet in place of mayo for sandwiches, wraps and bagels, and as a healthy dip for raw veggies or whole grain crackers.
Make your own hummus:
- 1 can chickpeas
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic
- 3 Tbsp. tahini
- Salt to taste
Put first four ingredients in a food processor or blender and mix until chickpeas are mashed. Then add tahini and mix again for about a minute. Spread and enjoy!
