The next time you’re feeling anxious, double down on stress relief by using your breath and your body to relax and re-center. Confidence is all about keeping your cool when you’re under pressure. Yoga can help you do that by teaching —in addition to improving flexibility and balance — you to relax into in various poses and use your breath to relax and settle when you feel unstable.

When I was a little girl, my mom was always mixing up homemade facial masks and concoctions to help her nails stay long and strong. She even used common household items (like eggshells) to make plant food and fertilizer. As a result, I love experimenting with DIY skincare recipes. They’re budget-friendly and usually very effective.
Years ago, I found an oily skin oatmeal mask that I loved. You stored it in the fridge so it was nice and cool when you put it on your face. And it smelled like oatmeal cookies – uh, YUM! I’ve since lost the “recipe” for that mask, but here’s one I found that I like just as much.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cucumber
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons ground oatmeal
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon honey
DIRECTIONS:
Place ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until creamy. Place in the freezer for approximately ten minutes to chill. Spread over face. Remember, this is homemade, so don’t expect it to look like a store bought mask. Allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. Wipe mask off with cool water and pat dry.
How It Works
Each ingredient in this recipe serves a purpose for your skin. The base ingredient, cucumber, creates a soothing feeling and can help de-puff and even out skin tone. Yogurt acts as a moisturizer, and the lactic acid and vitamins found in yogurt nourish the skin and can kill the bacteria that cause breakouts. The oatmeal helps to soak up excess oil from the skin and lock in moisture. Honey has antibacterial properties that kill germs on the skin, and also acts as a moisturizer that can help fade the appearance of dark spots. And lastly, the citric acid in the lemon juice acts as a mild exfoliator that will help remove dry, dead skin cells and allow for new cells to replace them.
Children aren’t the only ones getting all dressed up for Halloween. Your favorite candies and cookies are also donning orange and black wrappers and jack-o-lantern frosted faces. And they don’t wait for you to find them! These seasonal favors hit the shelves just weeks after Labor Day and will stick around well after October 31. Sometimes it seems like every store and desktop candy dish is taunting you to take a bite or buy a whole package of sugary snacks! What’s a healthy eater to do? Use these tricks to help you make it through several weeks’ worth of taunts without guilt.
- Buy trick-or-treat candy as late as possible. There will always be some left. Stores don’t run out of Halloween-themed items until mid-November, just before Thanksgiving hits. The earlier you buy, the more time those bags have to sit in your house tempting you to open them. Go just a few days before—or even the day of Halloween, if possible—to purchase your goods for the neighborhood kids. You’ll save money thanks to clearance deals (and probably a few calories, too).
- Double (or triple) knot your bags. Once your trick-or-treating candy does make it home, place it all in a plastic grocery bag or garbage bag, and double or even triple knot that sucker shut! If you find yourself aching for a taste in the next day or two, it’ll take you time to open the bag and you’ll hopefully be slowed enough to ask yourself whether a treat fits in your day. My suggestion: Don’t even go there! If you want a treat, get something else. Once you open the bag, it’s that much easier to go back for seconds (or thirds or fourths) Leave those bags closed until 6:18 p.m. on Halloween night when that first vampire rings the doorbell.
